Full Itinerary
We leave the city and head North to our first stop, Caversham Wildlife Park. The park is unique in many ways. It has bred its own wombats, Tasmanian devils and koalas, to name but a few, and is the only park in W.A. to have bred cassowaries. Although most of the park's animals are Australian, the park does have some exotics such as monkeys and llamas. Ironically, some introduced species, such as buffalo, donkeys and camels, are now considered to be Australian.
We head deeper into The Swan Valley which is Western Australia's oldest wine-growing region and many of its vineyards are still owned by descendants of the European emigrees who settled here in two waves, in the 1920's and after World War Two. Classic varieties grown here include chenin, blanc, verdelho, shiraz and chardonnay - all of which thrive in the region's hot, dry climate - along with less well-known varieties like viognier and zinfandel. The region is also well-known for its world-class fortified wines and offers one of Australia's biggest range of luscious "stickies", made from lesser known grape varieties including dolcetto, pedro, ximenes and navera. We will taste some of the best the region has to offer as well as have lunch alfresco in one of the fine establishments attached to one of the wineries.
On our way back to the city we make a stop at the Margaret River Chocolate Company. This factory provides a fascinating insight into the world of chocolate, and you can enjoy free chocolate tastings, interactive displays and viewing windows to watch the chocolate products being made. The range of innovative chocolate coated products available includes crunchy nougat, honeycomb, dried apricots, sun dried plums, dairy caramels and The Margaret River Chocolate Company's award-winning chocolate coated ginger.
By the end of the day you will be filled with some wonderful memories as well as some of the best chocolate and wines Australia has to offer.
